Immunotherapy Treatment

Immunotherapy has been successfully used to relieve allergy suffering for nearly a century; it is safe and effective.  Injections with increasing amounts of sensitizing allergen are given to the animal, beginning with a low dose, and increasing until the highest tolerable concentration is reached.  This long-term treatment gradually builds the pet's immunity to the specific allergens that are causing him to suffer.  Immunotherapy offers the dual advantages of relieving symptoms while halting the progression of allergic disease.

Distinguishing Features of ACTT Immunotherapy

One size does NOT fit all.  Every allergy case is unique, and all pets respond differently to immunotherapy.  For this reason, Bio-Medical Services formulates five different injection protocols to accomodate the needs of each allergic patient.  Protocols are custom-formulated according to the species, breed, age and weight and clinical history of each animal.

 Horses

Large Dogs   (greater than 40 lbs)

 Cats and mid-size dogs

 Small cats / small dogs.

 The benefits of custom treatment:

  • Fewer patient reactions to injections.
  • Increased owner compliance and satisfaction.
  • Quicker improvement of symptoms.

Careful Allergen Selection.  Current information in the human allergy field indicates that optimal treatment results are obtained with immunotherapy treatment consisting of the minimum number of relevant allergens.  (Some manufacturers treat 20 or more allergens in a single treatment set; more is not better.)

  • BMS  formulates canine/feline immunotherapy treatment sets with a maximum of 12 allergens per vial.
  • Equine treatment has a maximum of 20 allergens per vial.*
  • Because of cross-reactivity, successful immunotherapy does not require treating every individual allergen identified by allergy testing.
  • Bio-Medical Services focuses on treating the immuno-dominant allergens, which provide cross protection for any allergens in the related family members.

 * It is important to note that allergen concentrations in equine immunotherapy are stronger, which minimizes the dilution effects of higher numbers of allergens in the same vial, thereby allowing for a greater number of allergens per treatment set.
